Kansas House advances religious freedom measure

People who think the government is interfering with their right to religious freedom would get a legal boost under a bill that won first-round approval Wednesday in the Kansas House.

The House voted 65-58 to advance the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to a final vote today.

The House approved the measure last year on an 89-34 vote, but the measure died when the Senate took no action.

The bill would require local and state governments to have a "compelling" public interest before attempting to regulate a religious activity or organization. If regulation is necessary, it would require the "least-restrictive" option.
