City's 'psychic advisers' saw it coming

Wiccans, pagans, tarot-card readers and spiritual advisers turned out in force Monday night to give the City Council some advice: Ditch an ordinance regulating where "psychic advisers" can locate businesses within the city.

But after nearly three hours of debate, the council passed the ordinance by a 6-2 vote.

"The individuals you call psychic advisers are our spiritual leaders," said Donna Hammer, who predicted that, if adopted, the law would be challenged in court as a violation of constitutional rights to freedom of religion.

"I would prefer to have my tax dollars not spent defending an unconstitutional law," she said.

About 50 people either spoke out or signed a list indicating opposition to the measure.
