A South Georgia court heard a one-of-a-kind explanation for a murder -- an explanation a prosecutor called the most bizarre he's ever heard.
Reynold Calixte told a Dougherty County judge Friday he attacked three people in June 2001 because they put him under a voodoo spell. Calixte pleaded "guilty but mentally ill," under a plea bargain to one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault. He's been sentenced to life in prison.
Calixte explained in court he had to kill Stephen Dameus two years ago, because he couldn't afford to travel to his home in Haiti and get the spell removed by a witch doctor. The spell supposedly began when Dameus sprinkled black powder on Calixte's shoes, pillow and bus seat.
Prosecutors say Dameus was shot, stabbed and slashed in the throat in an Albany hotel. Calixte wound up cutting his own throat as well.
