The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) yesterday paraded 13 suspected cult members
said to have been arrested by the security division of the institution
following sporadic gunshots and clashes in the past three weeks.
Some students were reportedly injured in the clashes. The UNILORIN Deputy
Director of Information, Alhaji Isiaka Ali-Agan, who briefed the press on the
development said the suspects were caught red-handed perfecting their act at
Room G14 of the main-campus of the institution.
The suspects include Iyanda Lawal 300 level student of the Accounting and
Finance Department; Lantan Obayemi, 300 level Mechanical Engineering; Yusuf
Oluwole, 300 level History; Agoro Ago, 200 level Computer Science; Soyemi O.
Seyi, 200 Sociology; Koffo Alade spill-over student of Agriculture; Lawal A.
Ibrahim, 200 level Civil Engineering; Babalola Oluyomi, 400 level Business
Administration; Onkukime Chukwunoasenonso, 200 level Electrical Engineering;
Oshungboye S. David, diploma student of Data Processing.
Others are Oluyemi Samuel of the University of Ado-Ekiti and Lateef Aliyu of
Eruku Secondary School, Ekiti Local Government, Kwara State.
Ali-Agan said some reliable exhibits were recovered from the suspects and this
include one organiser, one yellow flag with Bucaneers inscription and stain of
blood, one red one one quarter yards of cloth, one ash colour shirt, one
Chevalier hot drink, one yellow cap, one red mask, Bucaneers letter heading
addressed "Notice 70 All students."
The Bucaneers, in the letter signed by Dr. N. Chibuzor, the grand patron and
copied to UNILORIN, Kwara Poly-technic and Federal Poly-technic Offa, said:
"It is usual of sealords to maintain peace and provide good atmosphere for
learning, but it has come to my notice that the Bucaneers in these institutions
can no longer condone the indiscipline of the 'Eiye Fraternity' and
others."
Ali-Agan said that in demonstration of the university's desire to flush out the
malady at "the shortest possible time," they have handed over the
suspects to the police and would soon be arraigned before the students
disciplinary committee for further action.
