Security vow for Pakistan mosques

The chief minister of Pakistan's Punjab province has vowed to improve security in all its 34,000 mosques.

Chaudhri Parvez Elahi said security guards would be posted at the mosques and provided with metal detectors.

He said at least half of the costs would have to be raised locally, some through public donations. The government would bear the rest.

About 80 people have died in Shia-Sunni violence in the Punjab, mostly in armed attacks on worshippers at mosques.

Last week, the provincial authorities in Sindh also announced similar measures for its mosques.
