Bangladeshi Islamists protest against women's league

Bangladeshi Islamists staged demonstrations in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday calling for the country's inaugural women's soccer league to be halted.

Police blocked a march of some 200 slogan-chanting Islamists from advancing towards the Kamalapur stadium, with two scheduled games going ahead.

"The national sports council and Kamalapur stadium will be sieged if the satanic women's football is not declared abandoned in next 24 hours," a statement of the Islamic Constitution Movement (ICM) said.

Bangladesh was forced to abandon a women's wrestling competition in August after protests by the radical Islamic group.

Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) officials said they would not bow to the protestors

"We will run the tournament and will ask the government to extend adequate security," Anwarul Haque, general secretary of Bangladesh Football Federation, told Reuters.
