The controversial Anti-Conversion Bill was today passed by Gujarat Assembly without discussion amidst loud protests and uproarious scenes by opposition Congress members over the killing of BJP leader Haren Pandya.
The Gujarat Freedom of Religion Bill, prepared on the lines of similar existing laws in Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh, was adopted with certain modifications wherein an individual or an organisation will have to seek prior permission of the district magistrate before conversion.
The bill, aiming to stop conversion "by force or by allurement or fraudulent means," was tabled by Minister of state for Home Amit Shah and passed without discussion following pandemonium in the house after assassination of Pandya in Ahmedabad this morning.
As soon as the House met for the second session of the day, Congress members created uproarious scenes on the law and order situation in the state.
They also staged a dharna in the well of the house and broke mikes.
Besides the Anti-Conversion law, the House passed another key legislation the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime Bill (GUJCOC) also without discussion.
