Romanian politician seeks immortality

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy politician, Amen!

This may well be the new prayer in the freshly finished church in Pades, south-west Romania, where a local councillor has been immortalised in a wall-painting.

On the right wall, as you enter the church, is a painting of the regional bishop, Teofan Savu.

On the left wall is a portrait of councillor Dan Ilie Morega, in black suit, white shirt and colourful tie, with his right hand on his heart.

Above him, on the ceiling, is an image of St Ilie, the prophet.

Since Mr Morega's middle name is Ilie, the bishopric further indulged the politician by making Ilie the church's patron saint.

Tarnished image

Dan Ilie Morega, who is also a businessman, claims he financed over 90% of the work on the church, which was built at his own request in his native village.

He also hired the painter.

But his holy image in the church in Pades, now conflicts with his public reputation, which has nosedived in recent months.

Dan Ilie Morega used to be the top man in Gorj province - head of the administration, councillor for the Social Democratic Party (the Romanian ruling party, run by President Ion Iliescu) and government expert in the Public Administration Ministry.

On top of that he was involved in various businesses and held the chair of Economic Sciences at the local university.

Church tradition

In less then a week, though, last October, he was accused of trying to award public contracts to his own companies, and of lacking the proper qualifications for his academic post.

He denied the allegations, but lost nearly all his positions, and was dropped by his own party.

Father Vasile Vladoiu, representing the church, says that it is not that unusual for church founders in this part of Romania to be painted on the entrance walls of holy buildings.

However these were historical figures - old kings and rulers.

Never before has an individual in lay clothes been painted inside a Romanian Orthodox church - but as Father Vladoiu says: "What do you expect, if he paid for it?"
