Lack of photo ID lands Amish man in federal court

An Amish man who was barred from entering the US because he lacked photo identification says the government is violating his First Amendment rights to freedom of religion.

Daniel Zehr is a member of the Old Order Amish sect, which believes that photographs are "graven images" forbidden in the Bible.

When the Canadian-born Zehr tried to return to the U-S at Buffalo after a visit to Ontario in January, he was barred from entering the country because he didn't have a photo I-D.

Zehr — who is married to an American woman and lives in the Amish community in Clarion County, Pennsylvania — was finally allowed to enter the U-S on a temporary basis last week.

His attorney says Zehr's rights to freedom of religion are being infringed upon by the Office of Homeland Security's photo identification requirements.

Zehr's case will be heard in a federal court on April 20th.
