United Nations officials are urging Buddhist monks to help fight AIDS by preaching self-discipline and moderation to children who study in temple schools.
A five-day conference in Thailand brought together more than 50 monks, nuns and social workers from across southeast Asia to discuss Buddhism's role in helping AIDS victims and preventing the disease. Participants discussed ways to integrate Buddhism into the everyday lives of communities -- especially youngsters who are at the highest risk.
A U.N. official said, "We believe that religion has a lot to offer to young people. It shouldn't be just about telling them not to do this or that." He added, "Monks could teach them to be responsible in sexual relationship and help them make appropriate choices."
