Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that inter-confessional and inter-religious peace in Russia is more important to statehood than in any other country of the world.
“This cultural diversity is our common asset,” Putin said.
He recalled that about ten years ago the country passed through a crucial phase, that of transition to democracy.
“In many European countries such transition had been rather painful, accompanied by inter-confessional and inter-ethnic problems,” Putin said.
The latest population census registered more ethnic groups than before.
“This does not mean that some new ethnic groups have emerged. It is an indication the people feel greater freedom, they have become more open, and they are not shy to declare their religious and ethnic affiliation,” Putin said.
