Leaders for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints aren't taking an official stance on Mel's new movie.
"We're not commanded in all things. We're given guidelines and we can choose for our selves whether or not we want to follow them... The admonition is that we should avoid R movies... I don't think there's anything directed against Mel Gibson or his movie," says LDS Church Spokesman, Kert Howard.
It's strong council, the church doesn't back with punishment.
"No they wouldn't be punished. In fact if they were at church and they mentioned that they watched it and their bishop was standing there he'd probably just smile," says Howard.
LDS students at ISU's institute of religion disagree on whether or not they'll see the movie.
Some say they'll see it.
"I'm kind of interested in seeing it just to see the point of view and how they portray it and stuff," says LDS religion student, Rebecca Browne.
Other say they won't
"I like to focus on the resurrection of Christ. Not so much on the excruciating pain he went through," says LDS religion student, Gregg Redd.
LDS church leaders did come out with a stance on one of their own movies showing Christ's death.
It's called "For this I was born".
"The brethren as they reviewed it said we don't want to focus on that. We don't want to shock people in to believing in Christ. We want them to love him and become like him through what he sacrificed," says LDS institute teacher and author, Cliff Rhoades.
The LDS church says it teaches principals and let's it's members govern themselves.
