Name change intends to clear up confusion

Take a look at the signs at the seven Flint district branches of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Within two years - or sooner, if local churches can arrange it - those signs will say Community of Christ.

The change in the denomination's name became official Friday, the 171st anniversary of the founding of the church.

"The old name identifies our heritage, but it was static," said Barbara Robinson, pastor of the Bristolwood congregation. "The new name sets the goal of why we're here."

In addition, she said, the new name translates into languages of other countries so the church can go worldwide. And there has always been confusion with the Mormon church, known officially as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

A denominational statement said, "Many have expressed a desire for a name that more adequately represents the church's theology and mission: `We proclaim Jesus Christ and promote communities of joy, hope, love, and peace.' Community of Christ reflects this denomination's quest to be community builders, and emphasizes the centrality of Jesus Christ."

But, Robinson said, the change has been difficult for members.

"I think the members are coming around," she said. The denomination helped by sending out a packet with scripture, prayer suggestions and activities for children. She also preached on it, there have been discussions and a video was shown.

Her congregation will put up a new sign as soon as possible, although the denomination gives local congregations two years. A new sign will be placed on Bristol Road in front of the church and the name will be taken off the building. A cross will be part of the sign, she said, and a cross may be placed on the building.

The Reorganized Church has been in the Flint area for more than 100 years. The Flint district includes two churches in Lapeer County, one in Clio and four in the immediate Flint area. There are about 1,300 members.
