Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – Authorities in the Dominican Republic are investigating why the German leader of a doomsday sect that believes in aliens had a gun arsenal at his house which police discovered after a deadly, hour-long shootout.
A judge ordered Thursday that 61-year-old Peter Brunck of Meisenheim, Germany, be held one year in jail during the investigation. Police arrested Brunck and a German woman after killing a German man with ties to the sect in a shooting Wednesday that wounded three officers.
The shootout occurred when police sought to serve a search warrant after neighbors complained of hearing shots at Brunck's house, which has an indoor shooting range.
Police said they discovered several rifles, grenades and professional crossbows with scopes along with seven bulletproof vests, a bulletproof car and an ambulance.
