The Metropolitan Police Department brought its 17-year investigation into Aum Shinrikyo to an end Monday as Tokyo prosecutors indicted a former member of the doomsday cult for the abduction and murder of a Tokyo notary in 1995.
Katsuya Takahashi, 54, the last Aum fugitive suspected in the cult's deadly sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system in March 1995, allegedly abducted Kiyoshi Kariya, then 68, on Feb. 28, 1995, and killed him the next day.
Takahashi was earlier indicted on other charges, including participating in the Tokyo subway gas attack the next month that killed 13 and injured more than 6,200 others.
The death sentences of Aum founder Shoko Asahara, whose real name is Chizuo Matsumoto, and his 12 close followers have already been finalized.
