The Vatican: U.S. Nuns Meet With Church Officials

Vatican - After meeting Tuesday with representatives of an association of American nuns that it had deemed to be too feminist, the Vatican reiterated that the group “remained under the supreme direction of the Holy See” and that it was bound to promote the “teachings of the church as faithfully taught through the ages.” The Leadership Conference of Women Religious, which represents 80 percent of Catholic nuns in the United States, had requested the meeting with officials in Rome to discuss a critique that led to a Vatican decision to overhaul the organization. The group’s president, Sister Pat Farrell, said in a statement that during an “open meeting” the group’s representatives “were able to directly express” their concerns. The nuns said they would report back to the group’s board in the United States and determine a course of action to respond to the Vatican.
