Control of polygamous sect appears headed to court

Salt Lake City, USA - Utah state officials are blocking any further attempts by rival church leaders to seize control of Warren Jeffs' polygamous sect.

The internal battle now likely heads to the courts.

Last week, church elder William E. Jessop filed to take over as president of the corporation that is the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Days later, a Jeffs loyalist shot back with a filing that removed Jessop and reinstated Jeffs, throwing the power struggle into limbo.

New papers filed with the state this week now claim that church members voted Sunday to support Jeffs' presidency and renounce Jessop.

It remained unclear Tuesday who the state now recognizes as the church president, but the courts will now likely make that final call.

Church attorneys had no immediate comment.
