Khartoum, Sudan – The archbishop of Khartoum, Card Gabriel Zubeir Wako, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during Mass celebrating the feast day of Saint Daniel Comboni, 10 October.
According to the Sudan Catholic Radio Network (SCRN), a man identified as Hamdan Mohamed Abdurrahman rose during the Glory and rushed the prelate with a knife, but was stopped by the cardinal’s master of ceremonies.
The Catholic Church has pressed for charges to be laid against the man, who was interrogated the next day at the central military committee of the Sudanese armed forces. He told them he was a Misseriya Arab from the state of southern Kordofan.
The archbishop has frequently complained about the growth of Islamic fundamentalism in the country and slammed Arab groups for their anti-Black violence.
