Batokunku and Sifoe, The Gambia - The United States embassy in The Gambia, last Friday gave out rice as Ramadan gift to the villages of Batokunku and Sifoe in Kombo South District of the Western Region.
Speaking at the presentation ceremonies in both villages, Cindy Cregg, the deputy chief of Mission at the US embassy, expressed delight at the presentation of the gift to the communities of Batokunku and Sifoe, which she said is meant to be distributed among the needy and the less privileged. She said the embassy cherishes and respects the holy month of Ramadan,which she noted made go out to the communities to see what they can do for the people.
She thanked the two villages for the warm welcome accorded to her and delegation. The US diplomat was also taken on a conducted tour of the schools after a presentation of some donated books and footballs to the Batokunku and Sifoe Nusery and Lower Basic Schools. The delegation from the embassy, was informed that the Batokunku Nursery and Lower Basic School have an enrolment of 225 and 830 pupils respectively and that the Batokunku Nursery School has only 2 classrooms.
Muhammed Lamin Keita Jatta and Alhaji Momodou Kanteh, Imams of Batokunku and Siffoe respectively, all commended the US embassy for the generosity they had extended in this holy month of Ramadan. They were unanimously grateful to the US embassy for the gesture, describing it as timely. The two communities, however, called on the US embassy to continue supporting them. Tula Orum, Public Affairs officer and Ebrima Jaw Manneh, Political and Economic assistant, all at the US embassy were part of the delegation.
