Hanoi, Vietnam - Vietnamese religious officials Tuesday rejected proposals by a controversial France-based Buddhist monk for increasing religious freedom in the communist country. Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese monk with a wide international following, called for greater tolerance by the government in a proposal published February 13.
The 12-point proposal called on Hanoi to offer amnesty to exiles, political and religious prisoners, and to refrain from interfering in the Buddhist church.
The government has not official responded, but officials told German Press Agency
