Nigeria: Niger Sacks Islahudeen Sect From Three LG's

Minna, Nigeria - From Niger State government has dislodged an Islamic sect, Islahudeen, from three of its local government areas of the state.

This is coming barely six months after Darul Islam sect was sacked from Mokwa, also in Niger State.

The dislodgement of the sect is sequel to a suit filed by people living in the affected local government in a Minna High Court order which ordered the state police to dislodge members of the sect from their enclave.

The group which had its headquarters at Gada Kasanga, in Mashegu Local government area of the state also operated in Beri town in Mariga Local government area, as well as in Ibanpa and Rafi Kogra in Kontagora Local government area of the state.

Our correspondent gathered that leader of the group Amir Umar Dogo Karfi fled his base before the task force evacuating them reached his location as he left behind his two wives and 15 children.

His family and that other some of his followers are presently under police custody pending further actions.

Daily Trust learnt that bulldozers and armed policemen arrived at the Gada Kasanga last Saturday where the sect central mosque and other buildings belonging to the sect members were destroyed.

It was also alleged that over 42 members of the sect have come from neighboring Niger Republic were sent back to their country by men of the Immigration Service at the weekend.

Speaking on the state government action, Alhaji Ahmed Khadi of the Ministry of Value Orientation and poverty eradication said the exercise was peaceful and successful.
