Hacker defaces 2 Boulder synagogues' websites

Boulder, USA - The websites of two Boulder synagogues were defaced Saturday by a hacker who associated the Jewish community with a terrorist organization, according to the company that monitors the websites.

A hacker claiming the name Waja (Adi Noor) hacked the Bonai Shalom and Har HaShem congregations' websites and posted anti-Semitic messages.

The Boulder Rabbinic Council's website was hacked as well, according to Jeff Finkelstein, owner of the the Boulder-based company Customer Paradigm, which designed and maintains the websites.

Saturday afternoon, Finkelstein received phone calls and e-mails from congregation members telling him something was wrong.

"This is not all that different from painting a swastika on the wall of a building," Finkelstein said.

It took about five hours to remove the anti-Semitic messages from the sites.

Security for the websites is being increased, Finkelstein said. He is also sorting through server logs looking for "fingerprints" the hacker may have left behind.

One URL was traced to Mexico, but Finkelstein said he does not believe that is the origin of the attack.

"Even bad hackers can do a good job of covering their tracks," Finkelstein said.

A completed report will be given to the Anti-Defamation League, which will work with the FBI to investigate the attack, Finkelstein said.
