Bauchi, Nigeria - The Nigeria Police said they have restored normalcy in Bauchi where a disagreement between the leader of the "Kalakato" sect, Malam Badamasi, and his followers, allegedly led to a crisis.
A statement, signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Emmanuel Ojukwu, in Abuja recently, said the crisis erupted when some followers of Badamasi allegedly attacked a venue where he was preaching.
It said that the timely intervention of the police saved the situation from deteriorating.
The statement said the police recovered two AK-47 rifles, bomb making materials, 73 knives, gunpowder and rounds of live ammunition from 20 suspects.
It said the crisis led to the burning of four houses, the death of 38 persons, including a soldier who was a member of the state security outfit, "Operation Flush".
It also said the police rescued 16 captives from the enclave of Badamasi.
However, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ogbonna Onovo, has given an assurance to the public on the safety of lives and property, adding that all the states had been put on alert to forestall a breach of the peace.
Onovo urged parents to monitor the activities of their children, considering that some disgruntled elements in society were taking advantage to involve young persons in sectarian crisis.
He, however, warned trouble-makers to desist from using violence to settle disputes and respect other people's rights to the freedom of worship.
The six months period is part of the current Third Assembly and Third Session.
