Leeds, UK - Muslims in Leeds are being urged to ensure their homes are secure during the holy month of Ramadan.
Last year there were a number of burglaries across the city that targeted Asian households containing valuable gold jewellery, police said.
Throughout the festival, which begins on Friday, Muslims will make regular visits to Mosques, leaving homes empty.
West Yorkshire Police and Leeds City Council will be issuing crime prevention advice throughout the month.
Police are also planning additional patrols for areas likely to be targeted by burglars during Ramadan.
Extra patrols
Supt Simon Whitehead, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "We want to ensure that everyone observing Ramadan can continue their religious obligations without fear of becoming a victim of crime.
"The extra patrols in place will not only reassure the public, but send a clear warning to offenders that they will be caught if they commit a crime in the area."
People are also being urged to avoid leaving any valuables on display and to ensure that doors and windows are securely locked.
Cars parked outside religious buildings during prayer times should also be locked and valuable items such as handbags, purses and phones removed or kept out of view.
