Minna, Nigeria - The government of Nigeria has deported 300 suspected members of an Islamist sect to neighboring Niger.
The sect members, which include men, women and children, were deported Monday from Minna, in central Niger State in Nigeria.
Officials say they had no legal documents allowing them to remain in the country. Reports say a second group of foreign sect members is awaiting screening and possible deportation.
On Saturday, police raided the sect's compound and moved its 3,000 residents to a government-controlled site in the town of Mokwa.
The detentions and deportations came weeks after the uprising of Boko Haram, a radical Islamic sect in Nigeria's northeast. More than 700 people were killed in clashes between the group and government forces.
