Salt Lake City, USA - Utah's capital will have its third "kiss-in" demonstration on Saturday.
Unlike previous rallies, this one won't be held outside the LDS Church Main Street Plaza, where a gay couple were detained by church guards last month after they kissed.
"We're not having it to attack the Mormon church," said Provo activist and organizer Ash Johnsdottir.
The LDS Church maintained the couple were removed from the church-owned plaza for behavior "inappropriate" for "any couple." But others saw the move as discriminatory.
Saturday's protest is part of a "Great Nationwide Kiss-in" with events in 50 U.S. and Canadian cities. The effort was organized by gay-rights bloggers on the East Coast in response to not only the Main Street Plaza incident but two similar cases in Texas where same-sex couples were stopped for smooching in public.
"There are certain things that are appropriate or not appropriate in terms of public displays of affection," Johnsdottir said. But "kissing is not one of those things. We're just there to show positive support and solidarity with all the LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender] couples who have been harassed or singled out by law enforcement."
Saturday's event starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Library Square amphitheater, 210 E. 400 South, in Salt Lake City. Speakers include KRCL RadioActive Executive Producer Troy Williams, Salt Lake City Council candidate Jennifer J. Johnson and actor and activist Charles Lynn Frost.
