Dean of Episcopal cathedral resigns, agrees to repay funds

The dean of Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Kansas City has resigned and promised to repay church funds he improperly spent over six years.

Dennis J.J. Schmidt, 51, said he would sell the house he shares with his family to repay more than $100,000 from the Dean's Discretionary Account.

The fund is intended to help people pay for temporary housing, clothing or utilities. Church leaders would not disclose how Schmidt spent the money.

A clergyman for 25 years, Schmidt renounced his vows this month, meaning he can no longer lead a congregation.

"It is with deep shame that I confess to you that I have broken your trust and faith," he wrote in a letter to church leaders. "While I remain in therapy and work toward healing, this in no way excuses my lack of judgment and proper control."

Schmidt has declined to discuss his resignation.
