Bigger church role for lay people

London, UK - Lay people could soon be taking a greater role as the Catholic Church bids to cope with the falling numbers of priests and dwindling congregations.

A radical plan for the Archdiocese of Armagh has been unveiled by Cardinal Sean Brady.

Parishes would be grouped together into clusters to make best use of resources and more lay people would be employed.

The cardinal insisted, though, that parishes would still retain their individual identities.
