Survey: 12 percent e-mail in church

Chicago, USA - A new survey suggested that 12 percent of U.S. residents check their e-mail while in church -- but only 9 percent do the same in Chicago.

The study of 4,000 U.S. residents over 13 years of age, including 200 Chicagoans, found that 12 percent of respondents have used cell phones, personal digital assistants and other wireless devices from the pews, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday.

Twenty-two percent of Atlanta residents polled reported checking e-mail in church.

Meanwhile, 12 percent of overall respondents reported using their mobile devices to check mail on the toilet -- a habit common to 47 percent of Chicago-based respondents, the Sun-Times said.

Among the respondents from Chicago, 49 percent keep e-mail devices near their pillows while they sleep, 49 check e-mail on public transportation, 21 percent use WiFi hotspots to check e-mail and 16 percent check e-mail while driving.
