Green Bay, USA - A state appeals court says a western Wisconsin judge wrongly took into account the educational views of the Amish when he ordered a teenager to mostly live with her father.
At issue in the dispute is the mother's Amish belief that formal education should end after the eighth grade and the father's wish that his daughter receive a traditional high school education.
The Third District Court of Appeals says today that a Dunn County judge erred in only considering the girl's education when he ordered her to mostly live with her father.
Court records say the mother had legal custody of the girl and the father had visitation rights until 2004, when the father sought sole legal custody because of differences over the girl's education.
