Topeka, USA - An anti-gay church in Kansas says a new law won't stop it from picketing military funerals.
Members of Westboro Baptist Church have picketed burials around the country for US troops killed in combat, saying the deaths are God's punishment for the country's tolerance of homosexuals.
Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius calls the protests "reprehensible" and "disgraceful."
She signed a law today keeping protesters from being within 150 feet of a funeral before, during or after the service. Violators could be fined up to $1,000 and face six months in jail.
The church says the law has no bearing on its protests because picketers are always more than 300 feet away from a funeral, and they leave before the service starts.
At least 32 other states have enacted laws to restrict funeral protests.
