Sale of Leavened Bread Protested in Israel

Jerusalem, Israel - About 500 Orthodox Jews gathered outside of the Haredi Rabbinical Court in Jerusalem to protest the sale of leavened bread during Passover.

Police blocked the protestors, who are from the Haredi sect of Judaism, from marching toward the center of the city. In response, the demonstrators blocked a street with garbage cans and later set them on fire, The Sunday Times of London reported.

Another 50 more protesters arrived to join in, but they were quickly dispersed.

Several dozen of the Haredim managed to make their way to a street where chametz, or leavened bread, is sold. They proceeded to read from Psalms and preach to customers that were enjoying their pizzas and hamburgers, the newspaper said.

This (eating chametz) can result in terror attacks, the Haredim yelled. If Jewish blood will be spilled, we will blame those who eat chametz.

One onlooker said, People should do what they please in their own homes, but the Haredim should also be respected. Hatred should be prevented at least on Shabbat and holidays.
