Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Two policemen and three religious enforcement officers came at night.
Rayappan Anthony’s family were surprised at the lateness of the call on Monday.
They were in for a bigger shock when three of them were issued subpoenas.
The subpoenas, issued at 8.20pm, were from the Syariah High Court requiring them to testify in their father’s case yesterday.
It was issued to sisters Mary, 45, Jayamary, 42, and Josephine, 44, at their home in Jalan Genting Klang.
The family, refusing to attend the proceedings on grounds that they were not Muslims and had no obligation to do so, lodged a police report yesterday.
At 12.30pm, Mary lodged the report at the Brickfields police headquarters, accompanied by her family and counsel, A. Sivanesan.
In her statement, Mary stated that the report was made to deter the Selangor Islamic Affairs Council or any other party from forcing them to submit to Syariah law as they were not Muslims.
She said the family was not compelled to attend Syariah proceedings but would appear in the High Court to testify next Monday.
"The action taken by the council is not right," she said in the report.
Sivanesan said: "We do not care what the outcome from today’s (yesterday) hearing is. We are firm with our decision not to appear in court."
