Ayodhyas saints fear law to take control of temples may come

Ayodhya, India - Alleging that Uttar Pradesh government intended to impose "Dharmada laws" on the lines of some southern states to manage temples and religious places, the saints of Ayodhya held a meeting to oppose any such move.

Stating that any such move would encroach upon the freedom of religion, the meeting presided over by president of Ram Janambhoomi Nyas, Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, passed a resolution terming it a "sinister" move to interfere in the religious practices of the Hindu community.

The law might also impose undue control and restrictions in the management of Hindu temples and religious places, the resolution said.

The resolution tabled by VHP leader Ram Vilas Vedanti alleged that some governments had made attempts to take over religious properties by appointing administrators and declaring them as disputed.

VHP spokesman Sharad Sharma alleged that UP government had ordered survey of temples and maths' in connection with this.
