Ahmedabad, India - The Gujarat police will reopen 1,594 cases and take action against 41 police officials for their alleged role in 2002 post-Godhra communal riots in Gujarat.
This was stated in the action-taken report of the Godhra-riots inquiry committee, headed by Gujarat DGP A K Bhargava, constituted by the supreme court to re-examine about 2,000 post-Godhra riots.
According to the report, action will be taken against 41 police officials for their alleged role during the riots and the police will arrest more than 600 accused wanted in these re-opened cases.
Thirteen new cases will also be filed, police officials said. The action-taken report, which is a quarterly report, will be filed before the supreme court in a few weeks time, the officials said.
The SC had earlier taken a stern stance on the closure of riots cases in Gujarat and had directed the state government to re-open about 2,000-odd cases which the police had closed after filing the respective 'A' summaries.
