Two convicted in Brazil nun killing

Belem, Brazil - A Brazilian court on Saturday found two men guilty of murdering American nun and rain forest activist Dorothy Stang in a contract killing.

A judge in the Amazon city of Belem sentenced ranch hand Raifran das Neves Sales to 27 years' imprisonment for shooting the 73-year-old Stang, after allegedly being paid by ranchers.

Another farmworker, Clodoaldo Carlos Batista, was found guilty of acting as an accomplice in the February 12 killing that drew world attention to land-related killings on Brazil's eastern Amazon frontier.

He received a sentence of 17 years.

The Stang case became a test of Brazil's will to combat land-related killings responsible for the deaths of over 1,300 peasant farmers and activists in the past 30 years in Latin America's largest country.

Three ranchers have been accused of ordering Stang's killing but are appealing the charges.
