Czech Roman Catholic missionary freed after kidnapping in Haiti

Prague, Czech Republic - Czech Roman Catholic missionary Roman Musil has been released by kidnappers in Haiti, Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda told the Czech CTK news agency Saturday.

"It is confirmed that the missionary Mr Musil has been freed," he said. "According to our information, he was released last night."

A spokesman for Musil's Order of Mary the Immaculate, Father Tomas Vyhnalek, told CTK the ransom of 50,000 dollars (42,300 euros) had not been paid.

He said another missionary who knew the kidnappers had negotiated with them for Musil's release, after an initial payment of "less than 4,000" dollars had failed to secure his freedom.

Musil, 34, went missing in northeast Haiti several days ago but his order was only informed on Thursday.

Kidnappings for ransom, especially of foreigners, are common occurrences in Haiti. A US missionary was kidnapped earlier this month and released a day later after a ransom, of less than the 300,000 dollars originally demanded, was paid.
