Southern Baptists call for pryers for Muslim conversions during Ramadan

The head of the Southern Baptist Convention is asking members to pray that Muslims will be converted to Christianity during Ramadan -- Islam's holy month.

The call to prayer was made in a statement issued by the Reverend James Merrit.

It asked members to "pray and fast that God will miraculously reveal himself through Jesus Christ to Muslims."

Merrit said Baptists should pray for Muslim conversions on December 16th, at the end of Ramadan.

He called Christianity "the only true religion."

Southern Baptists have provoked previous criticism for praying for the conversion of Jews and Hindus on holy days of those religions.

A spokesman for the Council on Islamic-Americans Relations wasn't fazed by the Baptist statement.

Ibrahim Hooper said, "It's a free country."
