Painting of Christ draws protest at community college

Poughkeepsie, USA - A painting of Christ that's part of an exhibit celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is drawing some protests.

A dozen people knelt before the painting and said the rosary yesterday. They called the painting an insult to the Christian faith.

The work depicts Mary Magdalene holding a fallen Jesus Christ. The title is "Magdalene Mourning Her Lover." It's on display at Dutchess Community College.

Salt Point resident Helen Westover organized the prayer vigil. She said she doesn't expect the painting to be removed, but she hopes the vigil will get people thinking.

College spokeswoman Ann Winfield said the college has no plans to remove the artwork. She said there are many different ways to interpret the piece -- such as, portraying Magdalene's spiritual love for Christ.
