Philadelphia Catholics get cardinal's apology for past clergy abuse

Philadelphia, USA - In a letter inserted in Sunday church bulletins throughout the Philadelphia archdiocese, Cardinal Justin Rigali acknowledges the suffering of clergy abuse victims, but calls a grand jury's criticism of his predecessors unfair.

The grand jury report released last week documents 63 cases of child sexual abuse by priests in the archdiocese. Prosecutors say the incidents happened too long ago for charges to be filed.

Five of the accused priests lived at Immaculate Conception Church in Philadelphia, where a nun who lived downstairs says she never knew they were pedophiles.

Outside several churches, victims' advocates handed out their own letter, urging others who were molested by priests to come forward.
