Dhaka, Bangladesh - Suspected militants carried out a bomb attack yesterday on the residence of a family belonging to the Ahmadiya Muslim sect in eastern Bangladesh, police said.
At least two people were critically injured in the blast which occurred in Brahmanbaria, a town 220km east of the capital Dhaka. Police also recovered an unexploded device, a local television channel ATN reported.
The Ahmadiyas are targets of violent attacks from militant groups who want the sect to be officially declared a non-Muslim community because of differences over religious issues.
Police suspect local Islamic militants were behind the attack.
Ahmadiyas worldwide have protested against the demand by militants for stamping them non-Muslims and called it a violation of their fundamental rights.
