Cairo, Egypt - Egyptian authorities have released 52 members of the banned opposition Muslim Brotherhood so they can take exams, a security source said on Tuesday. The 52 students, among hundreds detained in recent weeks in a crackdown on the movement, were released on Monday, the source said. The authorities let 77 go on Saturday for the same reason.
The source said 771 members of the group were still in detention.
The Brotherhood, along with other opposition groups, had organized protests calling for political reform in the Arab world's most populous country.
The Islamist movement says a constitutional amendment to allow presidential elections this year is designed to block any serious challenge to President Hosni Mubarak and his ruling National Democratic Party.
