Davenport, USA - A jury on Monday awarded nearly $1.9 million to a man who said he was abused by a Roman Catholic priest nearly 50 years ago.
The man, now 56, testified that former priest James Janssen, 83, had abused him for several years in the 1950s and 1960s and that the church kept it secret for decades.
Janssen, defrocked by the Vatican last year, admitted abuse during testimony last week, but he later recanted the testimony.
Janssen who reportedly faces seven similar lawsuits, was not in court for the verdict.
