Lahore, Pakistan - Several religious groups in Gilgit signed a peace agreement on Thursday to stop battling each other, Geo news channel reported.
A peace committee consisting of members of different religious factions was also formed to maintain peace in Gilgit, the report added. Committee members would be independent and their decisions would be final and acceptable to all, the report said.
A three-year tenure was prescribed for the committee members, who could be changed earlier after consulting the Northern Areas chief secretary if the major religious factions of the committee wanted, it added.
Decisions made by the Northern Areas chief secretary would be considered final in case the committee failed to reach consensus on any issue, the report said. According to the agreement, all religious factions in Gilgit would respect each other’s faith and abide by the decision of the national committee, which is chaired by the education minister, for changing the syllabus, the report added.
