Manila, Philippines -- POLICEMEN facing dismissal in the Philippines are being given the chance to redeem themselves by volunteering for crucifixion during an annual re-enactment of Jesus Christ’s final hours.
Dozens of Filipino devotees mark Good Friday by volunteering to be nailed to wooden crosses in what has become a tourist attraction in the Catholic country.
This year, the Central Luzon regional police command is giving officers who have been absent without leave a chance to redeem themselves by joining them.
Those absent for a short period can escape disciplinary measures by carrying a heavy wooden cross under the proposal.
Those absent for 100 days should volunteer to be crucified - but they can have their hands and feet tied by ropes rather than nailed down.
Senior Inspector Joanna Ponseca said: "We wants to take this time to forgive those who want to return to the service. This is a second chance being given to them and a chance for them to show they are really sorry."
The regional commander can suspend or fire officers who have been absent without leave.
As of today, 19 policemen were candidates for carrying a cross.
