Dr Carey wants talks between Anglicans and Sunnis
The Archbishop of Canterbury is due to sign an historic agreement aimed at promoting dialogue between Christians and Muslims Dr George Carey and Sheikh Mohamed Sayyed Tantawy, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar al-Sharif University in Cairo, will formally agree the joint initiative in a signing ceremony at Lambeth Palace.
Egypt's senior Islamic figure, Dr Tantawy holds of one of the most respected positions in Sunni Islam.
And the signing will put arrangements into place for talks between Anglicans and Sunni Muslims.
In most Islamic countries except Iran, the majority of Muslims are Sunnis. Shiites form the other major Islamic sect.
Earlier this month nearly 40 Muslim and Christian scholars from Britain and abroad took part in a two-day conference at Lambeth Palace.
