Jail for monk who tortured pupils

A monk who tortured pupils at a residential school in Stirlingshire for troubled children was jailed for two years yesterday.

A former night-watchman at the school who sexually molested boys was given the same sentence and a former woodwork teacher will be sentenced for offences of indecency today.

Michael Murphy, 69, known as Brother Benedict at St Ninian's List D school in Stirlingshire in the 1960s and 1970s when the offences took place, had been convicted of 10 charges of physical abuse.

James McKinstrey, 70, the night-watchman, of Port of Menteith, Stirling, was found guilty of four sex abuse charges.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Murphy carried out a "catalogue of assaults" on pupils including administering electric shocks with a homemade generator.

Pupils, who were mostly aged 10-12, were also whipped with knotted laces and one boy had his arm broken by the monk when he lost his temper.

Lord Carloway said the two men were guilty of a breach of trust but he accepted that Murphy had been asked to keep order among unruly boys with little or no training.

One victim said the sentences were "diabolical". The 52-year-old man, who was sent to the school in 1961, said: "I am appalled by these sentences. I was electrocuted in the boot room. Brother Benedict saw that as some sort of kick. Your punishment was to stand there while he turned these dials on a home-made device that he designed just to torture pupils."
