President Rudolf Schuster and Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda have signed the Agreement on Religious Education with representatives of eleven registered churches in Slovakia. Simultaneously the Treaty on Catholic Education between the Slovak Republic and the Holy See has been signed. The treaties will require pupils or their parents to choose between religion or ethics classes as a subject in the first level of primary school starting from September this year. The government will not require church schools to implement any educational programs that do not correspond with the teachings of their respective church. The government will provide these schools with the same funding as all other schools in Slovakia.
