Chief Imam of National Mosque in Abuja, Sheik Musa Mohammed, has urged Muslim delegates to the National Conference to defend Sharia.
The Imam, who was in Gusau for the fifth anniversary of Sharia implementation in Zamfara State, called on the delegates not to allow themselves to be used in tempering with the Islamic legal system or its implementation.
The cleric, who noted that Sharia was currently being implemented in some northern states of the country, said "I want to use this opportunity to call on Muslim delegates to the conference to go there with one voice."
"I want the delegates to reject in totality, anything that will tamper with Sharia implementation in some states. This is because, any attempt to tamper with the system will meet stiff resistance from the entire Muslims of the country," he stressed.
The chief imam, who commended Governor Ahmed Sani of Zamfara State for being the first governor in the country to reintroduce the legal code, commended other northern state governors for emulating him.
In his remarks, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido, appealed to Muslims to be united and act with one voice on religious issues.
He commended the Zamfara State governor "for your foresight, vision and untiring efforts in re-introducing and implementing Sharia in the state."
About six papers were delivered at the occasion by prominent Islamic scholars from different parts of the country.
