THE House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda has reiterated its call to the Government to withdraw from the membership of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).
The Church during a meeting at Lweza Training and Conference Centre recently sounded its concern about Uganda's membership in OIC and demanded that it pulls out because it was unconstitutional.
A February 18 statement signed by the Provincial Secretary, Rev. Canon George Tibesigwa, said by joining the OIC during Amin's rule, it was implied that Uganda was an Islamic nation.
"Uganda is not an Islamic nor Christian nation, even when it has an over 80% Christian population.
"It is clearly stated on page 13 Chapter Two of the National Constitution of the Republic of Uganda that "Uganda shall not adopt a State religion" This automatically implies that Uganda is a secular State," it said.
The Bishops denied allegations that they had demanded that President Yoweri Museveni cuts ties with the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
However, they said Gaddafi does not compare with the type of good Samaritan portrayed by Jesus Christ in the Bible.
OIC's charter "has the aims of strengthening Islam among member states, the struggle of all Muslim people to safeguard their dignity, independence and national rights, to safeguard the holy places and to support the Palestinian struggle."
